Dapo Abiodun knocked Adebutu at Supreme Court

Supreme court today in it's judgment affirmed Governor Dapo Abiodun as the duly elected Governor of Ogun state.


In the judgment delivered on Friday, Tijjani Abubakar, who led the five-member panel, dismissed the appeal filed by Ladi Adebutu, governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last elections.


In his rulings he said,“In the end, this appeal is unmeritorious and deserves to be dismissed. It is hereby dismissed,”


Election conducted by   Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in March 2023, declared Abiodun winner with 276,298 votes, however, Ladi Adebutu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 262,38 while  Biyi Otegbeye of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came  third with 94,754 votes.


Aftermath of  the election, PDP and Adebutu approached the tribunal, alleging that the governor did not get the majority of valid votes cast in the March 18 governorship election.


The petitioners accused INEC of non-compliance with the Electoral Act and corrupt practices during the election.


The petitioners also alleged that elections were disrupted by thugs in over 99 polling units, disenfranchising over 40,000 voters from participating in the election.


In his reaction to the judgement, Governor Dapo Abiodun said"Having manoeuvred through the intricate phases of the election petition tribunal, we can proudly proclaim that the Supreme Court has resoundingly affirmed our triumph".


"This profound validation unquestionably attests to the unwavering trust the people of Ogun State have bestowed upon us, confident in our capability to forge a society brimming with prosperity and harmony".


"With utmost sincerity, we embrace this momentous responsibility and solemnly pledge to undertake it with utmost diligence".
