NASARAWA STATE U-13 TOURNEY: DEFENDING CHAMPIONS, WAMBA, STUNNED IN CURTAIN RAISER.

Doma Local Government Area shocked Wamba Local Government Area and the footballing world by claiming victory in the opening game of the 2nd edition of the Nasarawa State U-13 Inter-Primary School Boys' Football Tournament.

In the 2024 edition of the competition decided at the Lafia City Stadium on Monday, 20th May, Doma stunned the  defending champions who were pre-tournament favourites with an unexpected 1-0 win.

Doma who exited the  tournament's first edition in 2023 from the Group stage was thrown into the metaphorical lion's den in their first game of Group 'A' which also has Nasarawa Local Government at the finals and were not given a prayer against the defending champions, Wamba.

With honorary kick-off performed by the Chairman of Nasarawa State Football Association, Salisu Galadima 'Basira', Wamba showed early glimpses of hope, making some forays into their opponents' territory.

As the time ticked on, the game began to gain balance, with Doma causing some onslaughts upfront.

Both sides went into the break with score at nil-nil.

The reverse half saw a goal scored by Doma Local Government Area disallowed for an offside, with Wamba nearly scoring from a distance in retaliation but for the brilliant effort of the goalkeeper  of the opposing side.

However, it was the underdogs who would claim all three important points to tentatively top the Group A table after Ahmed Mohammed Chese converted a penalty two minutes into extra time to throw their fans, including the Council's Executive Chairman, Architect Ahmed Sarki, into an enthralling jubilation as the stadium erupted with scintillating scenes of frenzied noise and colour, charged with an infectious energy.

All participating Local Government Areas attended the colourful opening ceremony of the competition as the chief Organizer of the tournament and founder of the Aliyu Bello Charity Foundation, Hon. Aliyu Bello, led other top functionaries to the event.

On Tuesday, 21st May, last year's runners-up, Kokona Local Government Area, will file out against Nasarawa-Eggon Local Government Area in the first game of Group B by 8 o'clock in the morning, as 2023 3rd-place winners, Lafia Local Government, open their Group C account against Akwanga Local Government Area by 10am.

Tuesday's games will climax with Karu Local Government Area taking on Keana Local Government Area in the Group D opener by 3pm.

Twelve Local Government Areas out of thirteen, including Awe, Nasarawa-Eggon, Doma, Wamba, Akwanga, Keffi, Karu, Kokona, Nasarawa, Obi, Lafia, Keana, are partaking in the one week-long competition, with Toto Local Government Area pulling out for the second year running.
