Poverty, economy downturn, rural neglect, causes of insecurity in Nigeria ~ Hon. Obika

The Honourable member representing AMAC/ Bwari Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Chinedu  Obika, have said that some of the causes of insecurity in Nigeria are poverty, economy downturn and rural neglect.


Hon. Chinedu Obika, stated this during a summit organized by Coalition of Nigeria Youth on Security and Safety Affairs (CONYSSA)  in Bwari to discuss the way forward in resolving prevalent security issues in the area and Nigeria as a nation. 


He said most of the lands that FCT dwellers supposed to use for farming have been occupied by buildings, thereby, hampering the means of livelihood of many,  which is causing hunger and an hungry man can take anything throw to him including engaging in crime all in the name of survival.


He also advocated for community and neighborhood policing, in which everyone will get involve in securing their communities through joint action of information gathering and collaboration with security agencies.


He also canvassed for adequate funding of security agencies which will in turn propel efficient delivery of their functions, because, welfarism play a pivotal role in preventing insecurity. 


He further said that indigenes need to be carried along in governance by appointing them in important positions which will instill confidence and sense of belonging among people and there will be development which will pave way for reduction in crimes.


Hon Obika, also called for community and rural development with provision of necessary infrastructure and basic amenities such as good road network, standard education among others.


While speaking with Deeonemedianews, Hon. Obika, said in order to reduce insecurity, tenants registration need to be put into law in which all the tenants will be registered in order to monitor who is residing in a particular area and what they engage in and anyone found wanting in truncating security and peace of his or her area will be decisively dealt with.


He further appealed to the National orientation agency to be up and doing in their responsibilities in sensitising public on important issues and development, most especially in the area of security.


He commended the effort made so far by the minister of FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike in combating insecurity. He further thanked the  organiser of the summit for coming with this type of event at this time and said it need to be replicated in other areas in FCT and beyond.
