Badminton Federation of Nigeria Soars to New Heights: Set to Host International Tournaments in 2025
The Badminton Federation of Nigeria, under the leadership of Francis Orbih Esq., has achieved remarkable success in Africa and globally, thanks to the proactive approach of its executives. Building on this momentum, Umuahia in Abia state, Nigeria, will host the first-ever international Para-Badminton championship from September 30th to October 5th, 2025, and the African Para-Badminton championship from October 6th to 12th, 2025.
In 2024, the BFN set unprecedented records, with Anuoluwapo Opeyori excelling in Africa and qualifying for the Olympic Games in Paris. He made history as the first badminton player to captain the Nigerian team at the Olympic Games.
The Federation also saw a significant return on investment as Eniola Bolaji won a bronze medal in the SLT3 Para-Badminton event at the Paris Olympics, becoming the first African to achieve this feat. Her success followed a four-month training camp in Spain sponsored by the BFN. Prior to the Olympics, she won the All African Para-Badminton Championship and two Spanish Para-Badminton Championships.
In 2024, the BFN successfully hosted the 7th Lagos International Badminton Classics in August and the Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA) African Para-Badminton workshop in November. The Federation also launched the first-ever BCA media launch for the road to LA 2028 in collaboration with the Badminton World Federation and Badminton Confederation Africa.
Furthermore, the BWF Grade One Coaching Course was held in December 2024, empowering thirteen young coaches. Naomi Oyinloye, a BCA-certified umpire from Nigeria, officiated at the Korea Masters 2024 HSBC/BWF World Tour Super 300 in November 2024.
With these achievements, 2025 promises to be an eventful year for the Badminton Federation of Nigeria as it continues to make strides in the world of badminton.
