NSC Inaugurates Elite Athletes and Podium Board to Boost Nigeria's Sports Performance.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially inaugurated its Elite Athletes and Podium Board, tasked with creating a sustainable scientific system for Nigerian athletes' discovery, welfare, and podium performances. The board, headed by former Nigerian international Yusuf Ali as CEO, aims to address lingering problems associated with Nigerian athletes' performances in major international competitions.
NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko emphasized the board's objective, stating, "This is why for the first time in Nigerian Sports, we have created an annual budget line for all our major international competitions such as the Olympics Games and the Commonwealth games." He also highlighted the board's structural nature, saying, "The reason why we are calling this a board, not a committee, is because a committee is temporary, but we want to make this a structural process that will outlive all of us".
Director General of the NSC, Hon Bukola Olopade, outlined the board's clear mandate to identify priority sports, support others for enhanced performance, and determine incentives for optimal athlete performance. The board will also conduct feasibility studies for high-performance centers and recommend professionals and remuneration structures.
Special Senior Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, charged the board to live up to expectations and ensure Nigeria produces consistent podium performances.
While speaking, the Chief Executive Officer , CEO, of the Board, Yusuf Ali, assured on behalf of the members that the board will deliver on the mandate given to them and he thanked the leadership of the NSC for finding him and his members worthy to undertake the task.
The members of the committee include Prof. ken Anugweje who is a member and Adviser, Olumide Bamiduro who is a member and secretary, Dr Emmanuel Igbinosa, Salihu Abubakar, Aku Aghazu, Tunde Adelakun, Prof Sadiq Abdulahi and Mary Onyali.
Others are Hauwa Kulu Akinyemi, Sunday Odebode, Olalekan Alabi, Otunba Sylvester Ikuejamoye representing (NAPHER-SD), Olumide Oyedeji representing the Nigeria Olympics committee, Isa Suleiman, representing PCN, Mrs Opara Tecla, Adebimpe Adewale and Shagaya Abdulmumeen.
