Aper Aku Stadium set for global recognition amidst controversy
By Tema Ager.
A visit to Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi will leave anyone marveling at the ongoing renovation work. Despite the lingering dispute between the contractor, Monimichelle, and the Benue State Sports Commissioner, Hon. Terkimbi Ikyange, the level of progress at the stadium speaks volumes about the transformation underway.
While Monimichelle is focused on delivering a world-class sports facility, allegations persist that certain quarters believe the Hon. Commissioner is deliberately frustrating the government's efforts. However, beyond the political wrangling, what truly matters is the impressive work being carried out at the stadium.
Determined to get firsthand information, I personally visited the facility and met with the CEO of Monimichelle Mr Ebi Ezekiel Egbe. After an extensive tour, I can confidently say that despite some delays, once completed, the stadium will not only be fully operational but will also gain global recognition.
Significant upgrades are being implemented, including the construction of a Governor’s Lounge, modern male and female dressing rooms, and biodigester soakaways. Additionally, solar lights are set to be installed both inside and around the stadium to enhance security and visibility. Previously, open drainage channels around the stadium served as access routes for thieves, leading to the theft of valuable items such as armored cables. However, these channels have now been securely sealed by the contractor.
Another major upgrade involves replacing the outdated and narrow iron swing doors, which do not meet modern sporting standards. The CEO of Monimichelle disclosed that each upgraded door, designed to meet international best practices—including those of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF)—costs no less than six million naira.
At the time of this report, workers were actively engaged in various tasks aimed at accelerating the project’s completion. With the level of dedication displayed on-site, it is only a matter of time before Aper Aku Stadium becomes a premier sports destination, boosting sports development in Benue State and beyond.
