Hustlers in Football Shouldn’t Use Aper Aku Stadium Renovation Contract as a Tool for Blackmail
Yes, the delivery of Aper Aku Stadium has been delayed, but considering the expanded scope of work given to the contractor, such delays are not unusual for projects of this scale. Delays in large infrastructure projects are common, especially when additional work is added after the initial contract.
After investigating the reasons for the delay, I found that the original scope was increased to include 14 new items not in the initial contract. While most of the original contract involved “buy and install” components, some of the added works are ongoing, pending mobilization and payment. Imported materials required for the project have arrived at the port but are awaiting clearance, accumulating demurrage because the contractor is still waiting for the release of part of the contract balance to clear them.
As of my last conversation with Ebi Egbe, CEO of Monimichelle Sports Facilities Construction Limited, he confirmed that he has not abandoned the site and work is progressing, including on the additional items that have not yet been paid for by the government. He maintains that he has not breached the contract and is not responsible for the delays.
The contract was signed between the Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, and Monimichelle, without the direct involvement of the Commissioner for Sports. This suggests the contractor is acting on the governor’s instructions, or the governor is satisfied with the reasons for the delay, which may explain the lack of public comment from the governor.
Claims that the unavailability of Aper Aku Stadium caused Lobi Stars’ relegation are unfounded. Lobi Stars have played at adopted venues for the past three seasons, including Jos Township Stadium and Lafia City Stadium, and have performed well, even qualifying for the Super Six and nearly winning the league. Blaming the stadium project for their current relegation is misleading and amounts to blackmail against the contractor.
*In summary:*
Project delay is due to expanded scope and payment issues, not contractor abandonment.
The contractor is still on site and working.
Linking Lobi Stars’ relegation to the stadium delay is not supported by facts.
