YSFON/NN CNS U-14 and NOWA U-17 Girls Football Championships Kick Off in Grand Style in Kaduna
The 21st edition of the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) U-14 Boys and the 13th edition of the Naval Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA) U-17 Girls Football Championships kicked off in grand style on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the iconic Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.
The prestigious grassroots football tournament, organised by the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON) in partnership with the Nigerian Navy, has drawn participation from 18 states and the Federal Capital Territory. All matches are being staged across two key venues in Kaduna — the Ahmadu Bello Stadium and the Nigeria Police College.
The week-long event opened with a vibrant and colourful ceremony, featuring a traditional match-past parade by all participating teams. The opening fixture, a goalless draw, featured the U-17 girls’ teams from Kaduna and Ondo States.
In a goodwill message delivered on his behalf by Rear Admiral YS Idris, the Director of Sports at Naval Headquarters, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, applauded the enduring collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and YSFON. He noted that the partnership has over the years helped to discover and nurture exceptional football talents who have gone on to represent Nigeria with pride. He reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to youth empowerment through sports and urged participants to compete fairly, forge friendships, and embrace the spirit of unity.
Declaring the championships officially open, the President of NOWA and wife of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Mrs. Ijeoma Ogalla, represented by Mrs. Victoria Bingel, encouraged the young athletes to display the highest levels of sportsmanship and discipline, both on and off the field.
The opening ceremony was graced by key dignitaries including the representative of the GOC 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General MA Kana; the representative of the Zonal Coordinator, Zone 6, National Sports Commission, Mr. Bartholomew Alah; and the National Secretary of YSFON, Mr. Patrick Okpavurhe, among others.
Following the successful screening of players on Monday, May 19, competitive action began in earnest, with teams in both categories showcasing their potential and fighting for honours.
In Matchday One Results, Chief of the Naval Staff U-14 Boys Category, Kaduna defeated Zamfara 4–0, Enugu overcame Kano 2–0, while Kwara edged Nasarawa 1–0. Bayelsa and Oyo played out a thrilling 2–2 draw, Niger secured a narrow 1–0 win over Bauchi, and Nigeria Army defeated Ondo 1–0.
In NOWA U-17 Girls Category, Enugu recorded a slim 1–0 victory over Plateau State.
