The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has emphasized the importance of youth development as 16 teams prepare to clash in the 2nd edition of the annual Democracy Day U18 Basketball Championship.
The tournament, scheduled to take place from June 13th to June 18th at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, will feature male and female basketball teams from the North Central region and the FCT.
Representing the CDS, Brig. Aliyu Abdulahi noted, "The CDS recognizes the importance of the young, vibrant youth population in national development. Hence the choice of the theme 'encouraging grassroots basketball talents' aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence among youths and encouraging tolerance in our society."
Brig. Abdulahi revealed that 16 teams, comprising 10 male and 6 female teams, will participate in the championship. The teams include representatives from Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, and the FCT, as well as teams from basketball academies.
Brig. Abdulahi disclosed that modalities have been put in place to ensure a smooth competition. "To ensure that the games go smoothly, officials have been invited from across the country, to ensure equity and fairness in the officiating. FIBA basketball rules shall apply throughout the competition."
Director of Sports for the Defence Headquarters, Air Vice Marshall Nanjul, confirmed that drug tests will be conducted to ensure the players' clean status. "I want to assure you that in all military competitions that we've held, drug tests have been conducted, and this particular event is not going to be different."
Air Vice Marshall Nanjul also revealed that the National Identity Number (NIN) will be used as a means of verification for the players. "The LOC has agreed and communicated with all the teams participating that NIN will be used as a means of verification for the players and other relevant documents that we may request for."
As the tournament approaches, players are already gearing up for the competition in anticipation for good outing.
